It's the start of a new month which means a brand new Cronut flavor from Dominique Ansel.
This March the flaky layers of dough are stuffed with plump raspberry jam, rich coconut cream and topped with a lime sugar frosting.
I can never quite decide what I like most about a cronut; the crispy burnt caramel ripples or the luscious cream inside. One is more than enough to satisfy a dessert craving; these guys are huge and super sweet but it's always nice to enjoy this famous Dominique treat. Last week I was invited to the E-Space anniversary party, celebrating 5 years of helping small businesses get a start. This NYC Economic Development sponsored space features a fully equipped commercial kitchen, office space and classrooms that have generated more than $6 million in revenue and created over 100 jobs in the past 5 years. All the different vendors that use the space were on hand showcasing their products under the theme "Five Alive: Cooks Kickin' It In Queens".
Some absolutely incredible St. Louis Gooey Butter Cakes were on hand from Gooey & Co. They're crisp on top, buttery on the bottom and served in gooey bite sized squares perfect for late afternoon sugar rush.
Casa Maya had three fantastic salsas: Salsa Verde with avocado, Dill-Icious and a Fire Roasted Red with layers of garlic, lime and charred jalapenos that had the perfect balance of spice and chunky tomato. These will be my go to party dips from this day forward.
Looking to have a five star meal in NYC without the hefty price tag? The answer is lunch. Many of the city's best restaurants offer prix-fix deals during the week so you get the same amazing food and atmosphere at a fraction of the cost. Here's my picks for the best:
The quiet sophistication of the room and innovative menu creations by Chef Shawn Hergatt always make for a delightful afternoon. The food is absolutely stunning and with two different pricing options and a vegetarian tasting menu just about anyone can find something to love.
The Deal- Two Courses $34, Three Courses $39 or Five Course Vegetarian Tasting for $55
Pro Tip- Don't overlook the tiny silver bowl on the table filled with olive tapanade
Good luck scoring a dinner reservation at the perennially packed Nomad. Reservations fill up 30 days in advance and the trendy scene can feel a bit overwhelming. Opt instead for lunch when the crowds are quieter and the same fabulous food will cost half as…
It seems kind of odd to me that I’ve never eaten at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. I see him shouting all over television constantly you would think it would remind me to eat at one of his places. When I saw the Maze participating in RW I decided it was finally time to try one out. I had the day off of work for some playoff football recovery time so I decided it would be the perfect excuse for lunch.
They started me off with a warm basket of bread and some butter which was incredibly unsatisfying for some reason. The bread had no flavor. Even a little salty butter on top didn’t help- it was just incredibly bland. Luckily that wouldn’t be the theme of the meal. My appetizer the Roasted Spanish Mackerel, grilled romaine lettuce, tomato marmalade, parmesan and basil.
Mackerel is a funny fish- sometimes I hate it other times I love it. Here it was definitely towards the love side. The tomato marmalade was delicious and the bitter greens and parmesan just completely worked with the mackerel. …
