Mexicue

Image
Fast casual restaurants have taken over this city the past few years, and while I personally think most are best suited for a generic lunch, there's one spot that works well for any meal, Mexicue.  This laid back Mexican/BBQ spot began as a food truck back in 2010; roaming the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn serving up delicious tacos filled with pickled cabbage, cotija cheese and all kinds of smoked meat. Then in 2014 they set up shop at three locations across the city, expanding their menu from tacos and sliders to bowls, burritos and all sorts of fantastic cocktails. Today the menu at Mexicue continues to evolve with items like Cornbread French Toast at brunch, bourbon fueled Mexican Mules during happy hour and their delicious Impossible Tacos, that taste exactly like the ground meat tacos Mom used to make but completely vegetarian.  Of course the old favorites are still around as well, like those spicy brisket tacos topped with thick lime crema....

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Even though it's a gross rainy day there's still reason to celebrate the fabulous Mexican culture with my favorite food in the world- TACOS! I'm planning to head to Casa Neta tonight for their absolutely incredible Short Rib tacos loaded with manchego cheese, guacamole and poblano rajas.  Plus they have a great happy hour from 5:00-7:00 which means delicious $10 margaritas. I honestly think it should be taco and tequila time every day- happy Cinco de Mayo! Casa Neta 40 East 20th Street New York, NY 10003

Tacqueria Diana

Taco joints are a dime a dozen but until recently finding one with actually good food was a bit of a challenge.  Luckily in the past few years newcomers like Dos Toros, Empellon Cocina and now Tacqueria Diane have really changed the Mexican food scene of the city.  This tiny little spot in the East Village churns out some incredible tacos and super thin crispy nachos. I especially love the Al Pastor; rich tender meat seasoned with just a bit of hot sauce, shredded lettuce, roasted pineapple and a flurry of cotija cheese.  Taco awesomeness at its' finest.
