Seabra's Mariqueira

Image
We had tickets for Radiohead out at the Prudential Center and used it as an excuse to try out some Portuguese fare in Newark. We walked into Seabra's and took a seat at the bar and ordered some drinks. A delicious pitcher of red Sangria arrived- refreshing and perfectly balanced- this was a good sign of things to come. I was really excited about our New Zealand cockle appetizer and it didn't disappoint.  An enormous bowl arrived filled with cockles and brimming with a delicious butter and garlic sauce. Along with some nice big pieces of bread perfect for sopping up the sauce. Luckily we split our entree because this seafood platter was HUGE!! There was a whole lobster, scallops, shrimp, mussels and clams- we seriously had a feast going here. Not to mention the big plate of rice.  Seabra's was absolutely fantastic.  The amount of food and quality was amazing.  Maybe I'll start heading over to Newark more often. Seabar's Mariq...

Brunch at El Camion Cantina

Image
I was touring around the East Village last week when the sky suddenly opened up and it was a full fledged downpour. Luckily El Camion was right in front of me so I dashed inside and used it as good excuse to have some brunch. Every brunch entree at El Camion comes with a free drink so who was I to argue a frozen margarita. I went traditional with my order of Huevos Rancheros and this really hit the spot.  I was happy as could be watching the rain and enjoying my solo meal.  By the time I finished the rain was gone and a beautiful rainbow greeted me upon exit.  Not too shabby for lazy Sunday. Goat Town

Image
I was craving a good Steak Tartare the other day and stumbled upon Goat Town.   The airy restaurant was almost empty when I arrived so I took a spot right in the big window up front. They had a Shandy on the menu which sounded just perfect for the humid day. My Steak Tartare was also quite perfect.  It came some cornichons on the side but there was no need for the pickle addition.  The meat already had a great sour and spice from the onions and olives mixed in.  The place started to fill up as I finished my meal so I went on my way hoping to return again when another craving hits. Brunch at the Brindle Room

Image
After trying out the Brindle Room burger at Googa Mooga I just had to go to the original and make sure that delicious char wasn’t a fluke. The burger is only available at brunch time, a meal Mr. T hates so I was already a little nervous about a bad showing…I had no need to be. The burger came out on a huge plate piled high with french fries and some seriously enormous slices of pickle. This burger was perfect in the middle and man oh man was that char ever present.   The outside was encased in a salty, buttery shell from the griddle.   This is really not a cheeseburger for the faint of heart- it is seriously rich. I had to have a few sips of Mr. T’s house made lemonade to refresh before our dessert arrived. A piping hot Salted Caramel doughnut- also only available at brunch.  I really enjoyed the Brindle Room- it’s such a cute and cozy spot- even Mr. T enjoyed himself.   With brunch items like Potato Chip Frittata, Shrimp & Grits and Bis...

Fried Chicken Goodness at Bobwhite Counter

Image
Tucked away over on Avenue C and 6 th - Bobwhite’s is something you could easily walk right past. But if you’re a southern food lover you should immediately make the stop. The fried chicken is made to order and arrives at your table piping hot and insanely crispy. Can you see the crispiness in this picture- well you’ll just have to take my word for it.   They have honey on the counter if you want to sweeten it up a bit and the side salad is a nice somewhat healthy addition to the plate.  The biscuit to me was only so so- Mr. T enjoyed it.  I guess I’m picky when it comes to biscuits.   The tiny space has a small but well thought out beer and wine list including our favorites Captain Lawrence and Founders, plus some sweet tea. This is a great little place not to miss if you’re over in Alphabet City . Bobwhite Counter

The New Plaza Food Hall

Image
There's a new food hall in town and Todd English has got some serious competition right next door now.  The first place I saw walking in was one of my all time favorites- Lady M. Of course they had the signature Crepe Cake as well as an enticing Banana Millefeuille. I pulled my drooling face away from there to check out some of the other food options like Luke’s Lobster. Chocolates from Maison du Chocolat.   No 7 Sub had a nice big station along with Tartinery.  I finally settled on Sushi or Gari’s spot where they had mini serving cups filed with various items. I decided to try out their special that day the Tuna, Avocado and Tarter Sauce Pressed sushi.   As you can see the amount of rice is overwhelming.   It was impossible to pick up and eat and I definitely struggled trying to do so.   However the flavors were awesome.   Incredibly fresh tuna and avocado with various sauces on top.   Even with all ...
