NYC Tastes

It's always nice to get out of the city for an afternoon and most often I visit the quaint, little town of Tarrytown for a gorgeous view of the Hudson River and a delicious meal.  This time I met my friend Carrie and we stopped into Sweetgrass Grill where I had an absolutely incredible salad. Big fluffy shards of kale with juicy orange segments, pickled onions, warm toasted almonds and covered in a creamy cashew truffle dressing.  This was such an awesome salad- it was really hearty, super healthy and just delicious.  I wanted to ask for some of that cashew nut dressing to go!   Carrie's Open-Faced Tempeh Reuban came covered in Daiya Cheddar, House-made Kraut and a Vegan Russian Dressing that was also incredible.  I really can't remember a time when we both enjoyed food like this so much.  Granted we usually meet up for a huge plate of ribs at Dinosaur BBQ but I still think it was the fact that everything tasted so fresh. ...

I took Metro North up to Tarrytown one Sunday to visit my friend for brunch. I had read about Tarry Tavern online and really wanted to see how the food stacked up. I really wanted to order one of everything on the menu- it looked amazing. To begin we split an order of the Butternut Squash & Pear Ravioli with Brown Butter, Sage and Walnut Puree. What’s not to love about this combination? The addition of pear to the squash gave the filling a little bit of zest. I thoroughly enjoyed dipping my fork in the walnut puree with each bit and the brown butter and sage sauce was phenomenal. Unfortunately the ravioli was a tad too al dente for my taste buds. I would have cooked it about a minute longer. I really struggled with what to order for my main course but it had been months since I indulged in a burger and I felt it was about time. I traveled up to White Plains on Sunday to do some serious shopping at the Westchester mall. Shopping is one of my least favorite past times but my friend Carrie and I really needed to pick up some summer wardrobe items before fall fashion season begins. After about two hours we had completely canvassed the entire mall, each bought an item and were ready to call it quits with a couple of beers and some good food. We drove down to the Washington Irving boat club in Tarrytown and had a couple beers on their beautiful outdoor patio that overlooks the Tappan Zee Bridge. Once we started to get a little hungry we moved over to the restaurant part of the club, Sunset Cove, and got a wonderful seat right on the water’s edge. We weren’t starving so we decided to just split some appetizers, which ended up being a great idea since we really filled up on the first item- the bread basket.
